Life is a roller coaster ride, filled with unexpected twists and turns. For me, the years following the lockdown have been crazy busy. As a mother of two adult children and the founder of https://www.thehectorcompany.co.uk (THC), I’ve embarked on a wild adventure that has redefined the meaning of “busy.” This blog reflects my experiences, juggling various roles, finding time for myself, and the relentless pursuit of success as a small business owner. The Birth of THC and
In 2020, on my 50th birthday, I took the leap of faith and started The Hector Company, a venture that has become my passion project. Leaving my permanent job of 15 years allowed me to focus on THC and be more present for our adult children, who, despite growing up, still needed their parents support, car and money. Being there for them as they navigate through life and their career paths has been both rewarding and time-consuming, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Besides running my business and being a mum, I have also taken on the roles of a “Roadie” for our daughter and a painter-decorator for our son’s new home. Assisting our daughter with her music career and helping our son create his dream home is fun, exhausting and expensive. Spoiler Alert – Parenting doesn’t end when children reach adulthood, but rather, it evolves into a different kind of support system.
Singing in a band with my husband has been a way to unwind and although I moan about it at times (because it takes up my time) our regular gigs and weekly practices keep us connected and grounded, even amid the chaos of life.
The Never-Ending Quest for “My Time”
Despite juggling various roles, one question haunts me – “Where is ‘my time’?” As a small business owner, it’s easy to feel like time is slipping away, drowned in a sea of responsibilities and to-do lists. Every moment is spent planning, sourcing, buying, uploading, selling, engaging on social media, and attending meetings, leaving little time for personal pursuits. Starting a small business may seem like a dream come true, but it comes with its fair share of challenges. Many people don’t realise the amount of time and effort that goes into running a small business. It’s not just about creating products or offering services; it’s about managing every aspect of the business, from marketing to logistics, and everything in between.
As a small business owner, I’ve come to understand the profound impact of customer support. When you purchase from a small business, you’re not just acquiring a product or service; you’re validating the countless hours of hard work and dedication put into making it a reality. Supporting small businesses empowers entrepreneurs and fosters a sense of community and connection.
As I reflect on this whirlwind year so far (I know its July and we still have 5 months until the end), I realise that embracing the hustle has given me a new perspective on life and the value of time. Balancing multiple roles and responsibilities has been challenging, but it has also brought immeasurable joy and satisfaction – I just have to remind myself every now and then. As I continue on this journey, I am grateful for the support of those who choose to support small businesses like mine, as it is your appreciation that fuels our dreams and aspirations. In the end, life may be busier than ever, but it’s also more fulfilling than I could have ever imagined.
